Please note that effective 7/1/2024, certification requirements have changed for all UC Davis recruitments.  Ensure you are up-to-date by reviewing the material below.  Please reach out to steadsupport@ucdavis.edu for any questions.

STEAD Certification Required for Members of Faculty Recruitment Committees

All members of faculty and endowed chair (both internal and external) recruitments must be STEAD-certified before the evaluation of applicants ends.  Faculty recruitments include Ladder, Academic Senate, and Professor of Teaching series.  The "Enhanced training for Faculty Search Online Training Module" will no longer be considered as a valid for any recruitment outside of the School of Medicine and School of Nursing.  Search committee chairs of both School of Medicine and School of Nursing searches are required to participate in a STEAD Faculty Search Committee Workshop.

Only the STEAD Faculty Search Committee Workshop can fulfill this requirement.  Workshops listed below DO NOT fulfill this requirement:

  • Enhanced Training for Faculty Search Committee Members Online Training Module*
    • *(see exception for UC Davis Schools of Human Health recruitments below)
  • STEAD Setting the Stage Workshop
  • STEAD Merits and Promotions Guidance
  • External trainings on equity and inclusion in the hiring process.

Department chairs are responsible for ensuring that all faculty recruitment committee members are complaint with this training or have registered for an upcoming training as soon as possible.  Effective 7/1/2024, STEAD certification expires after four (4) academic years.  A faculty member who participated in STEAD or SOM workshops during the 2020-2021 academic year will retain certification until June 30, 2025.  Please see the chart below for guidance.

Please note that non-UC Davis members of a faculty search committee must also be certified by attending the STEAD Search Committee Workshop.

Requirements for UC Davis Schools of Human Health

SOM/SON Faculty recruitment committee chairs are required to participate in STEAD workshops.  It is expected that the search committee chairs will in turn provide leadership on mitigating bias in the recruitment process for their committees.  NOTE: Priority for STEAD Workshops offered via Zoom will be given to SOM/SON search committee chairs.

SOM/SON Faculty recruitment committee members may satisfy the STEAD requirement by participating in the online module Enhanced Training for Faculty Search Committee Members offered by the Schools of Human Health and can register here.

How do I find out if I am certified?

Check to see when your certificate expires using the Faculty Search Committee Certificate finder.  If you are a faculty member unable to access this, please reach out to either your department chair, your department analysts or your dean's office analysts.

Analysts and faculty in need access to the Faculty Search Committee Certification Finder can find directions here
Analyst can create Search Committees through EMS to make tracking easier. Directions will be made available Fall 2024.

This finder will allow you to see what trainings one has taken (see example below).  Please be aware of your specific College/School's requirements for the training (see above notice).  For instance, the School of Law requires everyone participating in their faculty searches to specifically take the STEAD Search Committee Workshop prior to the initial review of applicants.  It is the role of the Faculty Recruitment Committee Chair to ensure all members of the committee are up-to-date with their training in accordance to the specific School/College's requirements.

What is the difference between the various types of trainings described in the certification finder?

There are three main trainings that the Faculty Search Committee Training Finder will present. Each are outlined below.

  • STEAD Faculty Search Committee Workshop
    • A 2-hour workshop conducted by the STEAD committee at the UC Davis campus.
    • For any questions regarding these trainings, please contact steadsupport@ucdavis.edu.
  • Enhanced Training For Faculty Search (UCDHS-LMS Online Module)
    • A self-paced e-course was created in Fall 2023 for faculty serving as a committee member on an upcoming School of Medicine or School of Nursing faculty search created by the Office for Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion.  One can access the training here.  For any questions regarding these trainings, please contact hs-hedi@ucdavis.edu.
    • Only SOM/SON faculty recruitment committee members may satisfy the STEAD requirement by participating in the online module “Enhanced Training for Faculty Search Committee Members” offered by the Schools of Human Health.  SOM/SON Faculty search committee chairs are required to participate in the STEAD Search Committee Workshop.  It is expected that the search committee chairs will in turn provide leadership on mitigating bias in the recruitment process for their committees.  For any questions regarding these trainings, please contact hs-hedi@ucdavis.edu.
  • Enhanced Training for Faculty Search
    • Training opportunity provided by the Office for Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion.  This training was previously held monthly up until Fall 2023 and has been replaced for the e-course module listed above.  The Office for Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion will continue to offer in-person/virtual training opportunities on an ad hoc basis at the request of departments with a minimum of 10 participants.  For any questions regarding these trainings, please contact hs-hedi@ucdavis.edu
