Distinguished Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Andreas J. Bäumler has pioneered research to investigate gastroenteritis on a molecular level. He has also developed groundbreaking research on typhoid fever pathogenesis, interactions between salmonella and its host, and changes in gut-associated microbial communities.
Dr. Paul Sieving, Professor of Ophthalmology, is known for foundational contributions to clinical conditions of genetic retinal and macular degeneration. He developed the first human trials for retinitis pigmentosa. The former Director of the National Eye Institute (NEI), he has recently launched the Center for Ocular Regenerative Therapy at UC Davis.
